The city of Strafford began with the construction of the railroad from Rolla to Springfield, this was part of the St. Louis to San Francisco line, nicknamed the Frisco, construction of the railroad began shortly after the Civil War. The men who built this section of tracks in Greene County named the new community Strafford; the name was a misspelling of the town in Connecticut known as Stratford. Along with the railroad Route 66 would later be added to go right through the heart of town. In the 1960s the construction of Interstate 44 began around the north side of Strafford. Strafford boasts 4 parks, one being the Delp Historical Route 66 and Veteran’s Memorial Park. The park features a replica of the Frisco Depot and has historical information inside, this is next to the replica of Bumgarner’s Store also a Route 66 historical fixture. This is a great place to stop and take photos for Route 66 tourist.
