The history of Yarmouth, Maine is a rich one. Its roots date back to 1641 when it started out as a trading post between two Native American tribes. Many people believe that Yarmouth got its name from the English town of Great Yarmouth, but it actually comes from a Native American word that means “the great river." Over the years, Yarmouth expanded by incorporating other townships and now has an area of over 77 square miles. It became an independent community in 1859 and incorporated as a city in 1900.
