History of Rockport
The history of Rockport, Maine traces back to the early 1600s when European settlers began migrating to what is now Maine. In 1605, British explorer Captain George Waymouth set up a trading post on Maine's rocky coast. The tiny settlement that grew up around Waymouth's trading post was incorporated in 1643 as Falmouth. Its name was changed to Rockport in 1815 after years of being known as Old or Upper Falmouth. Over time, Rockport's industries have included fishing, farming and commerce.
