Lincolnville is a lovely small town on the southern coast of Maine with a rich history, renowned arts community and beautiful nature. People are drawn to Lincolnville's charm and natural beauty year after year. The village is located along the Mid Coast Trail, which is a nationally recognized biking route. The population was 2,128 at the 2010 census. It is home to Maine Maritime Academy and includes the villages of Pine Point and Three Mile Harbor. The oldest known house in Lincolnville is the Hallett House, built in 1703 by Edward Hallett during the French and Indian War.
History of Lincolnville
The history of Lincolnville, Maine is one of hard work and perseverance. The first settlers in this town were the Wabanaki Indians. It was not until 1771 that Lincolnville became a town and Francis Small became its first settler. In New England, Lincoln County was created in 1749 and it was renamed Hancock County (after Massachusetts Governor William Shirley) in 1760. In 1809, as part of an act that gave Massachusetts a new northern boundary, Maine separated from Massachusetts and Lincoln County lost some lands since they were given to new counties established in Aroostook County and Washington County but gained other lands from Waldo County. Lincolnville is home to several shipyards and boat builders.
