History of Belfast
The history of Belfast, Maine is closely linked to the Irish potato famine of the 1840s. Thousands of immigrants left Ireland during this time and came to America by way of Canada, settling in various locations. During their travels through central Maine these immigrants passed through a small settlement called Upper Twin Brook near a natural harbor known as Long Reach at the mouth of the Passadumkeag River. There they saw a promising piece of land that they wanted to settle on so they came up with the idea of building a town there. They formed The Association for Establishing a Colony at Long Reach in 1849.
