Oakmont was chartered in 1918, it is a village and special taxing district. It's located near National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda. The village is to less than 200 residents. Oakmont neighbors can enjoy Ayrlawn Park and the annual block party and town picnic. The community covers 18.5 acres but consists of just two streets. Oakmont has a rich history, in the 18th century the area now known as Oakmont was farmland near a trade route that would become known as Wisconsin Avenue. At one time the tobacco trade flourished, the road was used to move crops to the busy Port of Georgetown. Bethesda Park was damaged by a hurricane in 1896, at that point, the town of Oakmont was organized from part of the park land. Some of the original farm buildings, including the house, are still on the property. After World War II, Oakmont experienced growth with many new homes.
