Glenwood, Iowa has a long and storied past, beginning with its establishment by Mormon settlers in 1848 under the name Coonsville. By 1851, it became the county seat of Mills County, and just a year later, after the Mormon migration to Utah, the community was renamed Glenwood in honor of Presbyterian minister Glenn Wood. As the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was completed, Glenwood evolved into a bustling regional hub. During the late 19th century, it gained recognition as Iowa’s center of fruit production, even hosting an annual Apple Carnival to celebrate the industry.
The town’s early economy grew rapidly with businesses such as a marble and stone works, the Glenwood Creamery, an iron factory, and a cannery that occupied an entire city block. Another defining piece of Glenwood history began in 1876, when the former Soldiers’ Orphans Home was transformed into the Iowa Asylum for Feeble-Minded Children—only the seventh facility of its kind in the nation. Following World War II, Glenwood became a prominent meat-packing center, eventually hosting one of the largest kosher packinghouses in the Midwest. Today, the former packing facility is owned by Trajet, a whirlpool company.
