Kokokahi is part of Kane?ohe in Honolulu County on the island of O’ahu in the United States state of Hawai?i. 

It is notable for being home to chocolate shops that sell products from their own manufacturing plants. Hawai?i is the only state in the United States that grows chocolate—more accurately, it grows Theobroma cacao, a tree that produces the cacao from which chocolate is produced. O’ahu is one of the two most northern places where cacao grows (the other is Taiwan).  

Residents and visitors can tour working cacao farms and many local chocolate factories. The cacao farms are not in the city, of course, but the trip is an easy one. 

While there is more cacao production on the Big Island than on O’ahu, the local chocolate shops and cacao farms are more accessible to visitors.  

During the civil war, a botanist brought cacao to the islands and began growing it for study. Over the years there were a few attempts to grow cacao commercially in Hawaii, similar to how sugar cane was being grown on huge estates, but all efforts failed until about ten years ago. Some producers started processing their own cacao, creating the US’s first tree-to-bar chocolates. Some of these are still being made today.
