Ray City was incorporated in August of 1909 and a city in Berrien and Lanier County. The community was named after Ray M. Thomas, the proprietor of a local mill. 2020 census stated there were 956 people with 484 households and 313 families residing there. With Ray City being a small town, there is limited things to do specifically in town. There is Ray’s Millpond Café which has history behind it. In 1866 the land was owned by Levi J. Knight but was purchased by Thomas Marcus Ray. In 1867, Mr. Ray and Mr. Knight built the dam that is on Beaver Dam Creek but also set up a mill to grind grain. They named it “Knight and Ray’s Mill” and it was the first commercial enterprise being historic. Then in 1870, Mr. Knight passed and Mr. Ray became the sole owner. In 1909, the community incorporated it as a city of Ray’s Mill and 1915 changed the name to Ray City. The pond was drained dry in 1947 and around the same time the grist mill was shut down. I contacted SERVPRO to help with what we thought was just water damage. SERVPRO sent a team the house right away. Blake and Holden identified the septic tank as the source of the water intrusion. They immediately went to work once the septic tank was serviced. They did a fantastic job drying and disinfecting the house, as well as removing all contaminated materials.
