Meigs was incorporated as a town in 1889. The city is named after an American college professor, journalist and President of University of Georgia, his name is Josiah Meigs. In 2020, the population was 928 with 394 households and 235 families residing in Meigs. Mims Aultman was the pharmacist at the drugstore that they built in the 1700s and they built their house right next door to it. With him building the pharmacy, that started bringing the town as a community. Overtime, a Quonset hut was open on both ends for the women to wash clothes by hand. Also at that time, there was two cotton gins, and they would line the bales down the road until they could load it on a train. Just a small walking alley led to the post office, the beauty shop, and the Snack Shack from there across the street was the small police station. Unfortunately, overtime they had a movie theater, Wurst’s grocery, police station and others that aren’t there anymore.
