White Springs is a town in North Florida.  It’s located in Hamilton County.  Although, Hamilton County is inland it is often referred to as a peninsula.  The county by land does touch any other part of Florida.  It has the Withlacoochee River on the west and the Suwannee River to the east and south. 

The Suwannee River was once the boundary between the Timucuan and the Apalachee people.  The area was first explored by the Spanish around 1530’s.  The springs became known at this time.  The natives had always visited the springs.  They believed it had healing powers.  The spring puts off a rotten egg smell.  This comes from dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas.  Even in times of war tribe members could go to the spring without the fear of being attacked. 

In 1831, Jackson Springs was formed by five businessmen.  Just one year later, Bryant Sheffield purchased the springs along with the ferry operation rights.  He built a hotel and spring house in 1842.  Visitors slowed down during the Civil War.  After the war was over tourists once again started to visit the area.  Retailers opened businesses.  Visitors arrived first by stagecoach.  Later they would arrive by train.  In 1885, the town of White Springs was incorporated. 

White Springs cannot be mentioned without the name Stephen Foster.   He is widely known for his song “Old Folks at Home”.  Which was written about the Suwannee River.  White Springs is also home to Stephen Foster State Park.  The annual Florida Folk Festival takes place there.
