The Long Neck / Harbeson area is an unincorporated community situated in the eastern center of Sussex County in Delaware. The town is located just south of Milton and west of Arabian Acres. Andersons Corner is 2.4 miles south, taking Harbeson Road, or Delaware Route 5. The intersection of U. S. Route 9, also known as Lewes Georgetown Highway, and Delaware Route 5, or Harbeson Road, creates the town’s center. As Rt. 5 proceeds south it becomes Long Neck road. Long Neck is found along Rehoboth Bay with many waterside commnuities. The neighborhood’s elevation is 36 feet, and it consists of one zip code, 19951. The town was named after Harbeson Hickman. The history of the Hickman family began with George Hickman, born in 1779. George purchased land in 1817 from Colonel Davis in Lewes after marrying Mary Wolfe Marriner. The businessman was aided in confounding the Delaware steamboat service that operated between Philadelphia and Lewes. His estate, Fisher’s Paradise, would remain in the family for four generations. Their second son, Harbeson Hickman, was born in 1818. Along with his older brother, they established a hardware business. However, they sold the business in 1849 to follow others headed to California for the Gold Rush. Harbeson returned to the area in 1859, a much wealtheir man. He bought as many as 10,000 acres of land. In 1885, he donated land to the Beaver Dam Protestant Church that had outgrown their current location. The church became the Grace Methodist Church before being renamed the Harbeson United Methodist Church in 1975. The community is home to several companies that drive its economy. Allen Harim Foods was formerly a family-owned poultry farm established in 1919 by Clarence Allen. However, the Harim Group, Korea’s largest poultry company, purchased the company in 2011 due to financial issues that were leading it into bankruptcy. The area around Harbeson is seeing more population growth than during any other time in its history. We proudly offer fire and water remediation to these neighbors as Harbeson is only 5 miles from our location. In addition to our fire and water services; many locals use our cleaning services as well.
