The town of Evans was filed with the clerk of Weld County on November 22,1869, making it the first town in Weld County.
Named for the second Territorial Governor of Colorado, John Evans, the town of Evans was established in 1867. Legend in Evans is that the county records were stole by night-riders from Greeley, who also burned the courthouse down with the county seat documents.
Known as the “Queen City of the Platte” when incorporated in 1869, Evans was the county Seat of W3eld County for many years. With a population of approximately 400 in a true wild west town, Evans has grown to nearly 19,000 residents. For a long time, Evans was the only town in the area to allow liquor and gambling, which made it the center of activity in the area.
Evans has several primary commercial areas located along US 85 just south of its junction with US 34, as well along 23rd Avenue and 37th Street with new commercial areas developing as the city expands to the west and south of the South Platte River.
Residents enjoy over 300 acres of parks and open space, and several hiking and biking trails along the South Platte river.
Evans experiences a semi-arid climate when high temperatures in the summer ranging from 85-90 degrees. The most precipitation typically occurs in May. Along with the cold in the winter, high dry temperatures in the summer, tornadoes can be a problem in the spring and summer where storms hit regularly.
