Muscle Shoals Cleanup and Restoration

Muscle Shoals was incorporated in 1923 and is known as the fastest growing city in northwest Alabama. The incorporation of the town was made official on April 24, 1923. Located in the eastern portion of Colbert County, Muscle Shoals is also known as “The Shoals”. Muscle Shoals also touches the banks of the Tennessee River. Indians first inhibited the lands bordered by the Tennessee River.  No one knows when the name was first used, however, there are many theories. One theory comes from the Indians due to the almost impossible task of having to navigate upstream.  They found the task almost impossible due to the strong current. The word muscle came from the strength it required to paddle a canoe up the rapids. In the early 1900s Muscle Shoals was farmland with cotton fields. In 1918 the building of Wilson Dam began. At its peak, the building of the dam employed more than 18,000 workers. The initial cost to build the dam was $46.5 million dollars. Later Congress formed the Tennessee Valley Authority to develop the dam as well as the entire river valley. This contributed to the conservation and utilization of natural resources. The town began plans for an elementary school, water works, electric power system, and the installation of a telephone system.

In the 1960’s Rick Hall, a legend in the music industry located a major industry in music. The industry, Fame Recording Studio, made Muscle Shoals “The Hit Recording Capital of the World”. Fame Recording Studio is located on Avalon Avenue in Muscle Shoals. In 1998 Fame Studio was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. The city offers the best in education, sports facilities, and community activities.
