Leighton Cleanup and Restoration

Leighton is a town in Colbert County, Alabama. It is part of the Shoals Metropolitan Statistical Area known as The Shoals. The town developed at the intersection of the Byler Road in 1819 and the Tuscumbia-Courtland Stage Road in 1820. Leighton was named for William Leigh. He was the first merchant and postmaster in 1824. The town was first named Crossroads, for its location at the intersection on one road that ran from the Tennessee River to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and another that connected Huntsville to Tuscumbia, Alabama. The railroad from Tuscumbia to Decatur was completed in 1834 and much cotton was shipped over. After the battle of Town Creek, April 28, 1863, Union troops burned stores, homes, and the college. Leighton was rebuilt and became a thriving commercial center for the surrounding area. The town was incorporated in 1891. By 1910, the town had seven general merchandise stores, three groceries, five cotton buyers, two hotels, a bank, grist mill, doctors, and Justice of the Peace. Colbert County High School opened in 1910.

The best place to visit is La Grange College Site Park. Other places of interest include, The John Johnson House, Preuit Oaks, La Grange Cemetery, and the Leighton Training School.
