Cherokee County located in North Alabama was named for the Cherokee Indians. They once controlled much of this part of North Alabama. Cherokee was founded on January 9, 1836 and created by an act of the state legislature. Cherokee County is home to Weiss Lake and Little River Canyon. These two lakes are the most popular for outdoor attractions. Weiss Lake has over 450 miles of shoreline and is known as the Crappie Capital of the World and hosts local, state, and national fishing tournaments. The Little River Canyon is one of the most extensive canyon and gorge systems in the country. It is known as one of the cleanest rivers in the Southeast with scenic waterfalls. In 1937, The Tennessee Valley Authority established the Cherokee Electric Authority in Centre to provide electricity to the surrounding region.
