Latah, a small town outside of Spokane, has had many names including Hangman's Creek and Alpha. In 1883 It was finally named Latah Creek after the nearby creek. This name comes from the native word “lahtoo” which means “stream where little fish are caught”.

In 1876, while examining the ground near the creek, a couple of brothers discovered mammoth fossils. With additional digging, they found other animals' fossils as well as evidence of prehistoric men. After this discovery, others flocked to the area and more fossils were found. The fossils were eventually sold to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago and can still be seen there. 

Latah has many historical buildings in the area including the Latah schoolhouse, the White Swan Hotel, and other Victorian homes. Many of these buildings have been weathered and are now in the process of being restored.
