Originally settled as a coal town, the now suburbanized area of Midlothian is part of the western suburbs of Richmond, Virginia. The village got its name from the coal mining company founded in 1836, the Mid-Lothian Mining and Manufacturing Company. However, the many coal mining communities attributed to the growth of the area had been around since the early 18th century. Midlothian is the site of the very first commercially mined coal in the Colony of Virginia as well as in North America as a whole. Because of the booming coal industry, the town is responsible for the first toll road in Virginia, the Midlothian Turnpike, which is also the state’s first “Hard-surfaced” road. This industry is also responsible for the creation of the first railroad company in Virginia, the Chesterfield Railroad, which was built to aid in the exportation of Midlothian’s coal products.
Nowadays the community spans many miles past the original village area and is home to many notable parks and other recreational activities. Breweries like Steam Bell Beer Works and rec parks like the River City Sportsplex are just a few of the activities that you can partake in when visiting Midlothian. If you’re more of a water and nature person than a sports person, you can also check out Robious Landing Park or the Swift Creek Reservoir.
