As the second oldest continuously inhabited English settlement in the United States after Hampton, Virginia, the City Point area of Hopewell was established in 1613 by Sir Thomas Dale. As such, the area is steeped in our country’s history and served as an important area in some of its most pivotal moments. During the Siege of Petersburg, Appomattox manor, one of three major plantations in the area, was used as the headquarters for Ulysses S. Grant and was visited by President Lincoln. Along with visiting the various historical sites like the Pamplin Historical Park and Weston Manor, there’s plenty to do and see in Hopewell. For example, you can head to The Beacon Theatre, a historic music venue built in the 1920s, or take a walk on the Hopewell River Walk and take in the gorgeous views of the Appomattox River. Also located in Hopewell is the Perfect Picks Flower Farm, a pick-your-own flower farm offering a colorful side of agriculture in the area with fields of a variety of blooms to choose from including a sea of beautiful sunflowers during the summer months.
