Steeped in history, the origins of Fort Lee date back to the beginning of the Civil War. Named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, the leader of the Confederacy.
Fort Lee was originally located just west of Richmond and later repositioned to its current location shortly after the United States declared war with Germany during World War I. Back then, Fort Lee’s primary function was that of a logistical staging facility. The recruits and draftees were equipped with the tools of war, trained to carry out their duties and shipped out to where their services were most needed.
Today this vast installation serves as a functioning Army post, home to a wide range of Army agencies including the US Army Transportation School, US Defense Commissary Agency, Army Logistics University, United States Army Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM), US Army Ordnance School, United States Army Quartermaster School, and the Sustainment.
With just over 9,000 fulltime residences, Fort Lee is a diverse mix of people from many walks of life. Located strategically between Richmond and Petersburg, VA, Fort Lee is convenient to many recreational activities.
