Altavista Cleanup and Restoration

The town of Altavista was created in 1905 during the construction of the east-west Tidewater Railway between Giles County (on the border with West Virginia) and Sewell's Point in what was at the time Norfolk County. Planned by Campbell County native William Nelson Page and financier and industrialist Henry Huttleston Rogers, the Tidewater Railway was combined with the Deepwater Railway in West Virginia to form the new Virginian Railway in 1907.

The cost of living is attractive, led by very affordable housing of all types and low-cost utilities. Local K-12 schools continue to be recognized among the state’s best, and opportunities for higher education abound.

Avoca, the principal architectural landmark of the Town of Altavista, is an American Queen Anne-style house, designed by architect J.M.B. Lewis and built in 1901. Designated a Virginia Historic Landmark and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Avoca is the home site of Revolutionary Patriot Colonel Charles Lynch. The house is an excellent example of 19th Century American Queen Anne architecture. The property was given to the Town in 1981 and is operated by the non-profit Avoca Museum and Historical Society
