Salina is a city in Sevier County, Utah. About 2,660 people live there.
History
30 families directed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints settled in the area in 1864. They named the town Salina because of its abundant salt deposits. The town incorporated in 1891 after connecting to the state's railroad system. It soon became a transportation hub and reincorporated as a city in 1913. The town housed a POW camp that was the site of a massacre by Private Clarence Bertucci in 1945.
Dining
Mom's Cafe opened in 1878 as a co-op. In 1926 it converted to a cafe that still serves delicious cafe-style food to residents and visitors.
Recreation
Whether you ride or just want to watch a show, Xtreme Barrel Racing features a variety of equestrian events at the Blackhawk Arena. The North Sevier community center provides youth sports opportunities, weight and cardio rooms and courts for basketball, racquetball and pickleball. Senior citizens can stop by for lunch, dances and bingo.
Other area attractions include a swimming pool, the Salina City Park, an antique truck museum, Miss Mary's Historical Museum and a historic site dedicated to the 1945 WWII POW massacre. The town is also on the northern edge of an extensive ATV trail called the Paiute Trail. Fans of roadside oddities will want to stop by the Super 8 parking lot to see the giant soda cans. Nearby Black Cap Mountain offers opportunities for camping, hiking and mountain climbing.
Notable Residents
Salina was once home to rodeo pioneer, sculptor, inventor, artist and Utah Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee Earl W. Bascom. The town is also the birthplace of businessman and sports team owner Dell Loy Hansen.
