Panguitch, Utah, is a city of around 1,700 people located on the western edge of Garfield County in the valley of the Sevier River. This county seat takes its name from a Southern Paiute word that translates to “big fish.” Its name was probably inspired by the lakes around which are teeming with rainbow trout year-round.
It was first settled in March of 1864 by Jens Nielsen, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who led a group of over 50 families to the area. Due to battles of the Black Hawk War, settlers left the area which remained abandoned until 1871 when new settlers arrived. With new settlements came a grist mill, sawmills, shingle mills and a tannery. Panguitch was incorporated in 1899.

Despite the name, the national park is a collection of natural amphitheaters. It is known for its abundance of hoodoos, which are tall spires of rock formed by erosion.
