Built in 1939, Hill Air Force Base was named in honor of Major Ployer Peter Hill, the Chief of the Flying Branch of the U.S. Army Air Corps Material Division of Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. The air force base was originally conceived as a permanent air depot in the Greater Salt Lake City area. Several sites in the area were considered, but the current location was ultimately selected. In the summer of 1939, Congress approved $8 million for the construction of this depot, which opened as Hill Field the following year. It officially became an air force base in 1948 after the creation of the United States Air Force.
