Brian Head is a small town in Utah that serves as the home to the Brian Head Ski Resort. About 83 people live there. At an elevation of 9,800 feet, the community is the highest town in Utah.
History
The community originally had the name "Monument Peak," but residents changed the name in 1900. The resort opened in 1965. The Fremont Tribe first discovered the area and settled it in the 1800s. It became part of Dixie National Park in 1906 and locals referred to it as "Little Ireland" in the early 20th century. The land changed hands several times over the decades until it was finally purchased for the development of the ski resort in the 1960s. The town incorporated in 1975.
Recreation
The ski resort is the main attraction for visitors to Brian Head. However, the nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument also attracts tourists to its half-mile deep geologic amphitheater, bristlecone pines, lush meadows and crystal-clear night skies. The area is also popular with campers, hikers, snowmobile riders, skiers, snowshoers and people who want to see the fall colors.
The Brian Head Ski Resort attracts visitors year-round. In the winter, it is Southern Utah's most affordable and family-friendly winter destination. The resort features eight lifts, spans 650 acres and has 71 runs. In the summer, visitors can enjoy mountain biking, disc golf, adventure trails, trampolines, zip lines, archery and a climbing wall.
Weather Risks
With a snow depth that remains at 7 inches into June and an average monthly depth of around 75 inches, Brian Head is one of the snowiest inhabited places in the United States. The winters are cold, with more than 80 days of every year being below freezing. Summers are mild and dry, though there can be thunderstorms during the North American Monsoon season.
