Mustang Island Cleanup and Restoration

Mustang Island is a barrier island that runs along the Texas coastline that separates the Gulf of Mexico from Corpus Christi Bay.  The entire island is 18 miles long stretching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas.  Mustang Island was first inhabited by the Paleo-Indians and by the 18th century after Spanish settlers had come through, it was renamed “Wild Horse” and then “Mustang Island” due to the large grazing herds of horses.

In the 1840s, the island and pass (now a shipping channel), were used by buccaneers, Mexican smugglers, merchants, and immigrants seeking their fortune.  It is even reported that the pirate Jean Lafitte frequented Mustang Island and its neighboring islands during the 1820s.  We think that most of the island has been combed over, but no treasure has been found to date.  During the Mexican-American War, a small fort was built on the island to defend the entrance of Aransas Bay.  Due to water damage from multiple storms, the small fort was eventually washed away after serving its purpose.

Mustang Island has warm, humid summers and very mild winters.  The record high temperature was 105F, with the summer average being 84F.  Each year Mustang Island receives an average of 25 inches of rain.  Dealing with the heat and humidity can be difficult and can add to the problem of mold outbreaks.  Being surrounded by water, the Mustang Island area rarely has to deal with any kind of fire damage.  Each year this area has to deal with any tropical storms or hurricanes that enter the Gulf of Mexico.  Mustang Island is the last point of land before you hit the mainland of Corpus Christi and can incurr the brunt of these storms, leading to massive water and fire damage.  Dealing with the storms year after year, the people of this community have become accustomed to storm and wind damage, as well as all of the things that follow.  Rebuilding and construction are a constant realization of this small community.
