“The Peaceful Side of the Smokies” is known for its great, unspoiled beauty and small-town appeal. Before the 1900s, Townsend was originally named by the Cherokee Indians as Tuckaleechee Cove which means “peaceful valley”, and that is a very apt description. In 1900 Wilson Townsend bought 80,000 acres and formed the Little River Lumber Company. Its main purpose was to supply tanning bark to the large tannery down the road in Walland. To log the steep terrain, they established the Little River Railroad whose railways and beds later became streets and walkways in the area now known as Townsend. In the mid 1930s a large portion of that land was sold to the State of Tennessee and then given to the National Park Service. Much of that acreage became part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including Cades Cove. The Cades Cove Loop is driven by hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and is still home to many historic structures that were built by the original settlers. Townsend is also home to Little Arrow Resort. Company Distilling and the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center.
