Crossville, TN started with a store opened by Samuel Lambeth at the intersection of a stagecoach road and a cattle path. It was known as Lambeth’s Crossroads until the 1830s when the community adopted the name of Crossville. During the Civil War the developed roads made it possible for both Union and Confederate forces to occupy the area. Crossville sent a roughly equal number of troops to both sides of the conflict. After World War 1 the construction of highway US 70 connected Crossville to the surrounding areas and made transportation to and from the town much easier. During the Great Depression the U.S. government’s Subsistence Homestead Division created a housing project South of Crossville called the Cumberland Homesteads. Today you can visit the museum at the Cumberland Homesteads Tower. Climbing to the top of the tower gives you a great view of the surrounding land.
