A Brief History of Claxton

The history of Claxton, Tennessee dates back to 1883 when the first settlers arrived. The town was incorporated in 1935, and named after J. H. Claxton (1857–1921), an employee of the Tennessee Midland Railroad who also served as sheriff and city marshal of Madisonville, Tennessee and operated a general store on Main Street. Today, the population of Claxton is over 1,600 people and over 2,400 if you include nearby communities including Chester County and Wilson County. The University of Tennessee offers a satellite campus in Claxton for students who live closer to home.
