Bath Springs began in the early 19th century as a small pioneer settlement in the southern hills of eastern Decatur County, named for a sulphur spring discovered there by Dr. William Hancock. Hancock settled in the area, built a health resort around the mineral spring, and gave the community its distinctive name. The spring water was believed to have health benefits, a common reason for spring-based tourism in Tennessee from about 1820 to 1930.

Early Development

Around 1840, Hancock’s health resort attracted visitors seeking the sulphur water, placing Bath Springs within a broader pattern of mineral spring resorts in the state. The medical office he established also served as the pioneer post office, handling mail for the community. This dual role as a health destination and a postal hub helped sustain the settlement in its early years.

Industry and Community Life

Before the Civil War, Bath Springs supported a tanning factory that processed cattle hides using locally sourced tree bark and acid, with products shipped by river boats. The community’s peak had about 47 houses, though today only 21 remain. Early families included the William Kindale family, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived to age 104.

Legacy

While the original resort is long gone, the sulphur spring still exists and retains its characteristic sulfur smell. Bath Springs remains an unincorporated community with a USPS post office (ZIP 38311) and is connected to the present-day road network along Tennessee State Route 114. The name endures as part of the local geography, linking the area to its pioneer-era trade, health tourism, and settlement history

Seems like people are always asking for recommendations for home repairs so wanted to pass along our experience with SERVPRO of Henry, Benton, Humphreys, and Hickman Counties SERVPRO Roofing. We highly recommend them! I had no idea they did siding and these type of repairs so was glad when Adam Marshall Jackson reached out when I was looking for someone to do the job. They were reasonably priced, great communication and did a great job! Keep them in mind for any repairs you might need!
