Located in the Southeastern portion of South Dakota, Sioux Falls is the largest city in South Dakota. With its strong economy and center of cultural creativity, Sioux Falls has steadily been growing in population, including an estimated growth of over 10,000 residents from 2020-2022. Founded in 1856 along the banks of the big Sioux River, Sioux Falls is now a main transportation hub with access to both Interstate 29 and Interstate 90. Sioux Falls' signature named Falls were carved out over 14,000 years ago by the last ice age. The area was home to a number of indigenous cultures before development began around the mid 1800's. the arrival of railroads in the late 1800's spurred the Dakota Boom of the 19th century. The impact of the railroad systems on Sioux Falls is evident still today as the 8th and Railroad cultural center revolves around the train tracks, with shops, restaurants, and microbreweries dotting either side of the tracks.
