Lead, South Dakota is a small historic mining town in Western South Dakota near the Wyoming State Line. The city itself was named for the “leads” (also sometimes called lodes) of the deposits of ore which were prevalent in the area. The city was founded as a company town by the Homestake Mining Company in 1876 and by 1910 it was the second largest town in South Dakota. The Homestake mine was the largest, deepest, and most productive mine in the western hemisphere before closing in January of 2002. After closing, the city and the Homestake mine itself was selected to become the site of Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory and now the Sanford Underground laboratory operates in its place conducting experiments in nuclear physics, neutrinos, and dark matter as well as biology and mine engineering studies.
Lead has a humid continental climate which makes the summers warm, and the winters are cold with very heavy snowfall. My 2015 Ford Explorer Sport sat outside for 8 weeks during Covid19. I didn't need to drive. When I finally started it I found that a packrat or mouse had died into the vehicle's air system.
