Garretson, South Dakota was incorporated in 1891. The town gets its name from a banker, A.S. Garretson, who was an influential businessman and politician in the 1800 and 1900’s. Garretson is a town or about 1300 residents. The area boasts a beautiful state park and a legendary tall tale location. Located just outside of the city limits, Palisades State Park is a beautiful recreation area open to everyone. The 1.2 billion year old quartzite rock foundations have been carved away by split rock creek. On the smaller side of South Dakota’s state parks, Palisades is a great location for day-hikes and camping. Another famous location in Garretson is Devil’s Gulch. Devil’s Gulch is reportedly where legendary outlaw Jesse James reportedly jumped his horse over a gap over split rock creek to avoid pursuers.
