Founded in the late 1800’s, Dell Rapids was originally known as Dell City. The residents changed the name to recognize the rapids of the Big Sioux River. After a fire on Main Street burned down the majority of Main Street, the buildings were rebuilt using the ample supply of quartzite provided by the two local quarries. The quarries were so integral to growth in the area that Dell Rapids holds a yearly Quarry Days community event in the summer. Residents get together to enjoy food, music, and games. The local high school has actually named their mascot The Quarriers, which is a pretty pretty great pun on warriors that blends in the importance of the quarries to the town. Dell Rapids is the hometown of former South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard.
