History of Johns Island, South Carolina

Johns Island was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kiawah. By the 1670s, white colonists had settled along the Stono River building plantations where they primarily grew indigo. The Stono Rebellion occurred on Johns Island in 1739, and the start of the Revolutionary War began on the shores of Johns Island in 1779. In 1864, the Battle of Bloody Bridge, or Burden's Causeway, occurred on Johns Island.
