Steelton, Pennsylvania was founded in 1880 with a population of 2,500 residents. Today, this small town has grown to 6,200 residents as of 2022. Steelton is famous for the Pennsylvania Steel Company that was later sold and named Bethlehem Steel Company. During the height of the steel industry, the Steelton plant was the first steel company in the United States that was dedicated to only producing steel. At this time, Steelton was home for 16,000 residents. In 1936, a massive flood consisting of water rising almost 33 feet damaged the majority of the west side of Steelton. Steelton once had middle a school and high school, but was forced to merge with The Highspire Borough school district due to a decline in enrollment. Before merging, Steelton High School was repeat state champions for football and basketball.
