South Bend Township, Pennsylvania is a township in the northeast corner of Armstrong County. South Bend Township is known for it’s historic homes, agricultural heritage and a beautiful trout stream that flows through the township. A Bit of History About South Bend
The history of South Bend Township and Armstrong County, Pennsylvania is explored through the use of primary and secondary sources. The township was first settled in 1802 when John Sneed began building his mill by the Kiskiminetas River. In 1821, Joseph Emerson became the township's first resident who was not employed by either a mill or coal mine. By 1925 there were sixteen coal mines in operation within the township. In 1985, a fourth generation of the Emerson family built their summer home near Seven Points Park, which included an old section of a former rail line.
