Salisbury Township is located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is among the smallest townships in the Commonwealth, with a population of about 13,500 people. The township borders Pennsylvania’s third-largest city, Allentown.
Many of the pioneer settlers of Salisbury Township were Austrian immigrants and their descendants. It is believed that the area was originally called Salzburg. In March of 1753, the small community along the Little Lehigh River near Bethlehem petitioned the Court of Quarter Sessions to create a new township. At that time, the United States was under British rule. The township’s name was officially recorded by a British clerk, who may have renamed it after the city of Salisbury in England.
Today, Salisbury Township is a quiet and quaint suburban community with a strong municipal structure and its own school district. It is home to several scenic parks, such as the Franko Farm Recreation Area, Scholl Woodlands Preserve, and the Lehigh Parkway. The Lehigh Parkway’s running and biking trails follow the Little Lehigh Creek, which has its own historic covered bridge.
