Macungie is a small borough located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Allentown and part of the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area.
The area now known as Macungie was first settled by German immigrants in 1735, making it the second-oldest borough in Lehigh County. In 1776, the land was purchased by Peter Miller, who called the area Millerstown. It was formally incorporated as a borough and renamed in 1857. Macungie, or "Maguntsche". comes from the Native American Lenape language, meaning "bear swamp" or "feeding place of the bears" The borough's official seal depicts a bear walking beside a body of water.
Macungie’s long history remains visible today through its parks, museums, and architecture. The Weaver House, located on Church Street in the town’s center, is a beautiful gothic cottage built in 1876. It was once home to Valentine Weaver, a major figure in the development of Pennsylvania’s iron industry. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
Macungie’s Bear Creek Mountain Resort is a popular destination for Winter sports enthusiasts, with over 330 acres of top-notch skiing trails and other outdoor facilities. During the off-season, the resort hosts a variety of concerts, festivals, and fireworks. It also serves as a trendy wedding venue!
