At one time, it was known as West Wheatfield and West Ridge but later in 1847 its name was changed to Indiana Township by proclamation of Governor William Bigler. "Philadelphia Emigrant Aid Company" started settling people in the hills of Pennsylvania during 1843 and 1844 because they knew their democratic values would be respected there. The town itself came into existence after these migrants moved onto 160 acres of dense forest land on a plateau where they could support themselves off of logging and agriculture. Originally known as Indiana Depot the community was named after the town's first postmaster Thomas L. Indiana who served from 1880-1900.
