In 1741, the land on which Emmaus now lies was donated to the Moravian Church for the purpose of creating a faith-based village. Initially called Salzburg, the village was renamed Emmaus in 1761 by Moravian Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg. It remained a closed community of the Moravian Church for approximately 100 years, until the mid-19th century.
