In 1684, William Penn granted Thomas Bowman 588 acres near Germantown. Bowman kept the land for two years and sold it to Samuel Richardson, a Quaker active in the early colonial government of Pennsylvania. The 104-acre area of land in the Logan section of Philadelphia, much of which is now a part of La Salle University’s campus. At the heart of Belfield sits Charles Wilson Peale's historic estate. Peale, a renounced artist, transformed the area into a country retreat home featuring a working farm and ornamental gardens. Peale's legacy lives on through his works featured in many museums throughout the city.
Belfield has experienced much growth over the years. The town has undergone many changes, but its historic charm serves as a reminder of what used to be; nearly 1,600 houses in the area were built in the 1940s.
