St. Helens, Oregon is the next-door neighbor to smaller Scappoose, having nearly double the population but sitting right next to each other. Established in 1889, St. Helens is a riverport dating back to the 1840s. On the famous Lewis and Clark expedition, Lewis and Clark passed through St. Helens on the night of November 5th, 1805 meeting several of the Native Americans living in the area. The tip of St. Helens sits only 300 feet away from Sauvie Island. In 1850 the original founder of St. Helens, who had previously named it Kiesno, changed the name to St. Helens in honor of Mount St. Helens which can be easily seen from the city. In 1883 the Northern Pacific Railroad Company completed a line going through St. Helens, bringing growing popularity to the town. St. Helens gained even more popularity in the 1990s when the Disney movie Halloweentown was filmed there, resulting in an annual event celebrating the movie with carnival-like events.
