Scappoose sits riverside in Columbia County, Oregon along the Columbia River channels. Scappoose gained its name from a nearby stream of Native American origins; the word Scappoose means “gravelly plain”. Scappoose is a midsize city made up of roughly 8,000 individuals. Home to the Scappoose Bay, an ecologically important habitat for native birds on the Pacific Flyway, the bay also provides a popular kayaking spot. Local hiking spot, Crown Zellerbach Trail spans a nearly 20-mile stretch down the parallel of the Columbia River. The popular hiking trail is used by cyclists and horseback riders alike, established in 1964 on an old railroad line that was later converted into a logging road by the Crown Zellerbach Corporation before eventually being used for recreational purposes. The Crown Zellerbach trail spans all the way towards Vernonia. Scappoose also features the Peace Candle of the World located on Highway 30. Constructed of a 50-foot silo and covered in wax, the candle is still maintained by private owners who have outfitted it with a neon flame.
