Cannon Beach earned its name from a US Navy cannon that washed ashore North of Arch Cape. The cannon was knocked loose from a schooner named “Shark” that hit land while attempting to cross the Columbia Bar. Known for its famous Haystack Rock, Cannon Beach is the former territory of the Tillamook Tribe of Native Americans. Cannon Beach sits against Ecola State Park which brings in visitors from all around the state year-round. The spot at which he stood was later named “Clark’s Point of View”, the viewpoint can be accessed by a hiking trail from Indian Beach in the Ecola State Park. The city is full of historical monuments such as a whale sculpture at the northern end of Hemlock Street that represents a journey William Clark, Sacagawea, and many other of their traveling companions made to the shore of Cannon Beach where they bartered with the Native American Tillamook tribe for 300 pounds of whale blubber and oil before their return to Fort Clatsop.
