Astoria is the oldest city in Oregon and was the first permanent American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Sitting on the south shore of the Columbia River which flows into the Pacific Ocean, Astoria is a hub for many of Oregon’s imports and export transportation. The Astoria-Megler Bridge, opened in 1966, spans 4.1 miles long connecting to neighboring Washington and is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. The population of Astoria is a quaint 10,181 according to the most recent census in 2020. Astoria was home to a large population of Native Americans as many of preserved artifacts were discovered during a 2012 excavation of the local area. The Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the Winter of 1805-1806 in Fort Clatsop, a small log structure that is southwest of modern-day Astoria.
