Fleetwood, New York is a rural village located in Broome County. It is one of the many small towns in New York that are tucked away amidst big cities and populated areas. This town has a population of 838 people and is largely made up of families with children. Fleetwood is known for having very cold winters and summers that are pleasant but not too hot. Its proximity to Binghamton makes it an attractive place for those who need to commute to work there every day. The geography of Fleetwood consists mostly of farmland, forests, and wildlife preserves (like Michalcoski Wildlife Refuge).

History of Fleetwood

From its earliest settlement by Native American tribes to it becoming a part of the Erie Canal, many events have shaped the town. The Town was founded by a group of pioneers in 1824. It was named after the two thousand acres of forest that ran alongside the small town of Cragsmoor. The land became known as Fleetwood Forest, and it was successfully logged for many years by a small settlement called Basketville until the early 1900’s when it began to decline. A new settlement rose up from nothing and quickly became one of New York's largest producers of coal, lumber and trees.
