History of Upper Montclair

The first developments of Upper Montclair dates back to the 18th century. It was a rural community founded by John Speer, a Dutch settler. The community was called "Speertown" because of the founder's last name. It remained Speertown for years until Montclair and Upper Montclair were incorporated into Bloomfield Township in 1868. It wasn't until the early 21st century the area was renamed to Upper Montclair. New Jersey Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line runs through Upper Montclair. There are three train stations located in the neighborhood as well.
