Morganton, North Carolina is located in Western North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is the county seat of Burke County and home to the North Carolina School of the Deaf, Broughton Hospital, and the second campus of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
A site five miles north of Morganton has been identified as the Mississippian culture chiefdom of Joara, occupied from AD 1400 to AD 1600. The site has been identified as a significant archaeological and historic site as digging and exploration continues today.
