Coldwater is a town in Tate County, MS, part of the Memphis Metropolitan Area. Coldwater is less than 30 minutes away from Tennessee, so the area shares a lot with its neighbors to the north. The original town was founded in 1856 and was called Elm Grove. Due to the construction of the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad in 1858, much development was stimulated and started the growth of the area. The new railroad spurred businesses, various stores, and houses of worship on both sides of the track. The town of Coldwater was officially incorporated in 1872. At that time, the city was only 1 square mile with the railroad depot directly in the center. The area was developed for cotton plantations and the railroad was used to export the goods out of the area into surrounding manufacturing facilities.
In 1873, during Reconstruction, Coldwater became a part of Desoto County. The town continued to grow with an influx of settlers from Virginia, the Carolinas, Alabama, and other surrounding states. The area was soon flooded with people seeking a better life for themselves and their families.
The Coldwater area had to deal with multiple floods from the Mississippi River due to its close location to it. In the early 1940s, the Army Corp of Engineers built the Arkabutla Lake and Dam project along the Coldwater River to help protect the area from future flood damage. Flood damage isn’t the only natural disaster affecting the area. There have been over 90 tornado’s in the Coldwater area since 1950. They have caused major water and fire damage to the area leading to massive rebuilding efforts.
